New hospital wing
After months of careful planning and hard work (not to mention
tested patience from the noisy construction!) Sprott House
is pleased to report that its new hospital wing is finished
and operating.
The sixteen superior single rooms, each with its own en-suite,
are in high demand -and there is currently only one vacancy.
Sprott offers top quality hospital care with 24-hour support
from trained and experienced caregivers, two registered nurses
on call throughout the day and regular visits from a nearby
GP. Enquiries to Carole Hazelman at Carole@sprotthouse.co.nz
Child's
wing successfully renovated
People
beamed and bubbly flowed as Sprott House acknowledged its
latest completed project— a successfully renovated Childs
Wing. Two stories high with new license to occupy studios,
Childs Wing was officially opened by Dr Rev Brown on the 26th
November 2008 and applauded by guests gathered to celebrate
the event.
Friends
of Sprott House, along with Board members, staff, residents
and their families, watched as a plaque was unveiled and speeches
were made by General Manager Carole Hazelman and President
of the Board Don Rennie - both of whom are delighted with
the redevelopment.
After the formalities, lunch was enjoyed by those present
and toasts were made to a further success in Sprott’s
architectural make-over.
Training
area development
Work is currently underway on converting former nurses’
accommodation rooms into a training area for caregivers and
other members of staff. Practical, educational courses will
be run from these rooms, which are situated on the ground
floor of Main Block.
Renovations are expected to be completed by late February/early
March. Management is in negotiation with the Department of
Health over the possibility of offering other people the use
of our new training facilities. Listen out for updates on
this interesting development!

Everybody at Sprott House offers their sincere gratitude and
congratulations to Colleen Edwards and Tau Malaga for reaching

These hard-working women
have been with Sprott since 1983 - Tau as a caregiver
and Colleen with the maintenance department.
In her current role as Facilities Manager, Colleen
deals with maintenance issues and directs a team of
cleaning staff and laundry staff so that life at Sprott
House runs smoothly. Her focus has consistently been
on providing our residents and their families with the
very best service.
Tau uses her years of experience and admirable work
ethic to deliver the type of aged care Sprott House
stands for — warm and secure.
She is a valued member of staff and has embraced many
changes and challenges during her time here.

Garage Sale and Open Day
We ran our first ever Garage
Sale on Saturday 29th November and what a sale it
was! Bargains galore - people came from all over to buy books,
beds, linen, crockery, pictures and furniture. A BBQ added
to the fun of the day. Thanks to all those who came and supported
the cause!
A brand new, impressive banner attracted visitors to the
Sprott House Open Day on Sunday 7th December.
A glorious day saw people happily walk around the sunny grounds,
participate in tours of the buildings and rooms, and see how
the Sprott House rest home and aged care complex operates
on a day-to-day basis. Children played outside as families
visited current residents. Among the questions and comments,
particular interest was shown in the available Villas apartments
and the new hospital wing.
On
Air!
Carole
Hazelman and Rae-ann Sinclair, Board member, featured recently
on The Breeze with Stu Smith. Topics for discussion included
Sprott House’s 110th Birthday, the new hospital wing
and the BOT-approved plans to build a new Dementia Wing.
Carole informed listeners of the dire need for better dementia
care in New Zealand (more than 40,000 New Zealanders suffer
from dementia and dementia units are almost at maximum capacity.)
When asked “how good” this new wing will be, Rae-ann
guaranteed a type of care that will be “leading edge”.
By having pets, a blokes’ shed and a safe kitchen where
clients can potter without harming themselves, Sprott House
will be revolutionary in terms of creating a living environment
as “normal” as possible.
